I think about where those babies are now.

Do they laugh like you do?

Do they wrap their fingers around their father’s thumb as they fall asleep?

Do they smile when their mother kisses their bellies?

Yesterday, we saw two twin boys in the grocery store.

They were dressed in matching striped shirts

and wearing shoes that flashed with every step.

I wondered, for a moment, if they were the boys from the NICU.

I so desperately wanted it to be them.

I so desperately wanted them to have made it home.
